Abstract

Psychological confusion is a state of mind that is associated with difficulty in understanding, processing or retaining information. So the aim of the present study was the impact of game therapy on cognitive confusion in mentally retarded athletes. The statistical population of this research was 80 mentally retarded athletes in the country, whose scores in the cognitive confusion test were one SD higher than mean. From this population, 40 athletes were selected by from this population, 40 people were selected using convenience sampling and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The Mason's cognitive confusion scale (2001) was used. The research design was of quasi-experimental type with pre-test, post-test, follow-up with control group. The experimental group received the intervention one day after the pretest for 10 sessions of 25 minutes, once a week. The posttest was performed one day after the intervention and the follow-up was performed two weeks after the test. To analyze the data, Independent sample t test and repeated measures analysis of variance were used. (p≤0.05) The results showed a significant difference in the mean scores of the experimental and control groups, leading to a reduction in cognitive confusion in the experimental group, which was also observed in the follow-up test. Therefore, group play therapy is effective in reducing cognitive confusion in athletes with mental retardation, and this method can be used as a way to control and improve cognitive confusion in athletes.
