Abstract

The gut microbiota is a complex and dynamic community of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats. This review explores its pivotal role in maintaining health and contributing to disease. A balanced microbiome is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, immune support, and overall well-being. It aids in preventing inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, and metabolic diseases while influencing behavior via the gut-brain axis. Conversely, dysbiosis can lead to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, diabetes, and weakened immunity. This paper highlights the importance of preserving microbiota balance for promoting health and preventing disease in canine and feline populations.
