Occupational medicine serves as a cornerstone for promoting worker health, preventing illnesses, and addressing evolving workplace risks driven by globalization, technology, and emerging diseases. This narrative review aims to explore interventions for controlling emerging diseases and enhancing occupational health outcomes, including workplace surveillance systems, vaccination and PPE programs, health literacy initiatives, mental health considerations in emergencies, equity and inclusivity efforts, and the influence of organizational and policy frameworks. It summarizes the state of the science, highlights challenges and opportunities through expert perspectives, and encourages interdisciplinary dialogue to inform future practices and close research gaps.
Key themes encompass conceptual foundations, defining occupational health, emerging diseases, and multidisciplinary practices that integrate clinical care, public health, and safety amid converging hazards. Theoretical models discussed include the hierarchy of controls for risk reduction, ecological approaches to interconnected health determinants, infectious disease transmission models for targeted interventions, and the Total Worker Health® framework, which holistically addresses physical, psychosocial, and chronic health overlaps to build resilience. The historical evolution traces the field's origins from Bernardino Ramazzini's 1700 work on occupational hazards, through Industrial Revolution legislation like the UK's Factory Act of 1833, to modern expansions incorporating infectious control post-COVID-19.
Significant reflections reveal occupational medicine's adaptation to global crises, with recent studies showing improved surveillance, risk assessments, and vaccination efficacy in sectors like healthcare and manufacturing, reducing absenteeism and vulnerability. Challenges such as socioeconomic inequities, antimicrobial resistance, and gig economy alterations emphasize the need for adaptable, contextually relevant protections. Overall, the review concludes that occupational medicine's proactive, evidence-based evolution is essential for integrating with public health to safeguard workers against complex threats, fostering resilient global systems.
