Abstract

This article reviews smart facade movement mechanisms in buildings and presents a clear classification of the main systems used in responsive envelope design. Smart facades are no longer treated as static building skins; instead, they are designed to adapt to environmental conditions and improve building performance through motion, control, and material response. The paper organizes these mechanisms into passive, mechanical, electro-mechanical and kinetic, and sensor- and control-driven responsive systems. Each category is discussed in terms of its working principle, typical motion type, and role in regulating sunlight, heat gain, ventilation, daylight, and visual expression. The review also examines how these systems contribute to energy efficiency, thermal comfort, daylight quality, and architectural aesthetics. In addition, the paper highlights major challenges associated with smart facades, including high initial cost, maintenance demands, mechanical reliability, and long-term durability. Real-world examples such as the Institut du Monde Arabe, Al Bahr Towers, and The Edge show how smart facade strategies can be implemented at building scale to create responsive and high-performance architecture. The study concludes that smart facades represent an important intersection of architecture, engineering, and environmental control, but their broader adoption depends on simplifying maintenance, improving reliability, and reducing lifecycle cost. Future research should focus on long-term performance assessment, integration with building automation systems, and the development of robust adaptive materials and control strategies. Overall, the article provides a structured review that can support researchers, designers, and engineers in understanding and classifying movement-based smart facade systems for sustainable building design.
