Abstract

In recent years, the rapid growth of electronic waste (e-waste) and lithium-ion battery consumption has raised significant safety and environmental concerns. Recycling facilities are exposed to complex hazards, including chemical exposure, fire and explosion risks, and environmental contamination. Traditional management approaches often fail to provide proactive risk mitigation, resulting in frequent occupational accidents and ecological impacts. This study investigates the integration of advanced safety management systems and sustainability practices in the e-waste and battery recycling sectors, with a focus on European industrial contexts. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining quantitative risk assessment models with qualitative insights from industry experts and regulatory frameworks. Hazard identification covered chemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical risks, while environmental risks included heavy metal contamination, air emissions, and water pollution. The study applied a comprehensive risk scoring system, integrating probability, severity, and exposure duration to prioritize safety interventions. Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital monitoring technologies were evaluated for their potential to enhance real-time risk prediction and operational control. Findings indicate that facilities employing AI-driven monitoring, digital twins, and predictive maintenance reduced accident rates by 35% and environmental incidents by 28% compared to conventional methods. Moreover, sustainability measures, such as optimized waste segregation and closed-loop recycling systems, significantly minimized hazardous emissions and resource consumption. Challenges related to workforce training, ethical use of surveillance data, and cost implications were identified as barriers to full-scale adoption. Policy recommendations emphasize standardization of risk assessment protocols, regulatory incentives for AI integration, and continuous environmental monitoring to achieve safe and sustainable recycling operations. The study concludes that a holistic integration of technology, human expertise, and environmental stewardship is critical to ensuring both occupational safety and ecological sustainability in the rapidly expanding e-waste and battery recycling industry. This research provides a framework for future industrial practices, aligning with European Union goals for zero-harm workplaces and circular economy objectives.
